The Power of BJJ Training for Kids by Griphouse Academy
Hey everyone, today I want to talk about something close to my heart – the importance of martial arts training for kids. As the head coach of The Griphouse’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu kids program in Glasgow, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible impact it can have on young minds, and I’m excited to share our journey with you and how
we came to launch our kids program, Griphouse Academy.
Since our inception in 2005, The Griphouse has been a staple of Glasgow’s martial arts community, providing a welcoming and supportive environment for practitioners of all ages and abilities. Founded by Guy Ramsay and Paul McVeigh, our academy is more than just a training facility – it’s a family, united by a passion for martial arts and a commitment to personal growth.
Benefits of Kids’ BJJ
First and foremost, let’s talk about self-defence. In today’s world, it’s more important than ever for kids to feel empowered and capable of protecting themselves if the need arises. Martial arts training equips them with valuable skills and techniques to stay safe in various situations, giving them the confidence to navigate the world with ease. I’ve had so many parents come to me to tell me the lessons they’ve learned in
class have helped them prevent bullying at school.
But it’s not just about physical prowess – martial arts also cultivate inner strength and confidence. I’ve seen shy, reserved kids who wouldn’t say a word at first, blossom into confident, assertive individuals through their training at Griphouse Academy. Whether it’s mastering a new technique or overcoming a challenge in class, every achievement boosts their self-esteem and reinforces their belief in themselves.
Coach-Student Relationships
Take the time to invest in students professionally and personally. I have all the time in the world for my students. It’s not just enough to build them up as athletes and provide them with martial arts training. I think it’s important that any coach learns about the children they’re working with and builds connections with them. When I look back at my years in education when I was young, the best memories I have are the teachers who not just gave great instruction, but would also show genuine care for the students. Making learning fun and the time spent in the classroom memorable.
Getting to know my students better also allows me to coach them better. I know what days to push them to work that little bit harder in training, or when to ease off and let them have a bit more fun.
Our Academy
Inclusivity. At Griphouse Academy, we believe that martial arts should be accessible to all, regardless of ability or background. That’s why we’ve worked hard to create a welcoming environment where kids of all abilities, including those with Additional Support Needs (ASN), can thrive. Our tailored approach ensures that every child receives the support they need to succeed, whether it’s extra attention from our coaches or modifications to accommodate specific needs. I would strongly recommend parents who have children with ASN have their kids try BJJ. The balance of physical and mental stimulation make it highly rewarding.
Financial support is also offered. Times are tough today, and some have been hit harder than others with the current cost of living crisis. We don’t believe this should impact a child’s ability to participate in a sport they enjoy. Seeing the transformation in our kids is a great thing. From building friendships and fostering teamwork to developing discipline and resilience, the benefits of martial arts training extend far beyond the mat. We’ll often travel to competitions as a large group. Win or lose, they have always have an amazing time with their teammates, and it’s always those memories that stick with them. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness their growth and progress, knowing that we’ve played a part in shaping their journey.
Over the years, we’ve produced numerous champions, both on and off the competition circuit. Our kids have managed to obtain some of the most prestigious championships in the sport at a National, European and World level. We believe in providing the best possible instruction to our kids and teens. We want them to thrive as much as possible. Their success and achievements have inspired us to expand our program to six days a week, ensuring that even more kids have the opportunity to experience the life-changing benefits of martial arts.
So, whether you’re a parent looking for a fun and empowering activity for your child or someone passionate about supporting kids in their personal development, I encourage you to consider martial arts training. And if you’re ever in Glasgow, be sure to stop by Griphouse Academy and see first-hand what we’re all about.
