Black belt meditating

Welcome to Little Black Belt, a martial arts blog about life, learning, and the journey towards a girl’s greatest accessory: a black belt in taekwondo!

Hello! My name is Melanie, and I am your resident Tae Kwon Diva. This blog began as an online diary to chronicle the insights and ideas I was having about a year into my taekwondo training.

Over time the blog has morphed into something different. Practicing martial arts has not only taught me a great deal about the taekwondo itself, but I’ve gained insight about self-development, facing challenges, leadership, maintaining a positive attitude, and living your best life.

My goal is to share those lessons with you.

Why Taekwondo?
Here’s the truth:
Taekwondo helped me rein in the crazy and create an awesome life. Martial arts may not be for you, but the life lessons I’ve gained from it can help everyone.

If you’d like to read more about how I got into taekwondo and my thoughts on modern-day practice, check out my interview on my fellow martial arts blogger page: MyWifeIsaBlackBelt.Com.

The black belt mindset is for everyone, regardless of martial arts experience or training.
Confidence, perseverance, hunger to learn, and becoming the best version of yourself can happen without setting foot in a dojang. It’s about breaking bad habits and stopping the endless chase for answers to the wrong questions.

All martial arts are welcome
Taekwondo (with a little hapkido and grappling for fun) happens to be my martial art of choice, but I love watching and learning about other styles of combat sports. This blog is home to several guest posts about many different styles of martial arts, and the list of guest writers keeps growing!

If you are interested in learning about martial arts training, whether it is taekwondo or another style, check out this great informational guide to martial arts on Body Mind and Modem.

Let’s have some fun.

  1. Love the pictures of Great Grandmaster Park’s flying side kicks on the wall – is it his school in Ft. Worth?

  2. Yes I have had the pleasure of knowing GGM Park for almost 20 years. He presided over my son’s blackbelt tests from 1st to 5 th Dan . Spent many hours in his office in conversations with him. A very wonderful man. You too are fortunate to be one of his students.

    1. Thanks for reading, S Wave! Taekwondo helps you learn so much beyond punching and kicking. I’ve learned more about life and myself than I have in years. And I can punch and kick. 🙂

      1. That’s great! You’ve clearly found something priceless. I’m not surprised to hear that such an ancient practice has truly fostered self-awareness. Keep it up!

  3. Good for you! 🙂
And I have to say you sound a bit like my wife (who inspired me to start a new blog) in your passion for your martial art. Though she does hapkido – but as I understand it hapkido and taekwondo have a lot in common…

    1. Thanks so much for your nice comment! We do some hapkido at black belt level. Kicking is fun, but so is getting someone in a wrist lock or throwing them on the floor. 🙂

      1. Yeah I can imagine that! Just watching it, it looks really cool! And it’s a pretty awesome skill to have! 😎
Why particularly a teenage boy though? 😛
